In Hanover, extra ballots arrived yesterday to handle heavy voter turnout.

In years past, the county had 9,000 ballots on hand for Democratic voters. But when it became obvious the election would not be decided before the Virginia primary, the county doubled its order. The county has 18,000 ballots for those voting Republican.

“I can print off an extra 5,000 ballots if I have to,“ said Robert Ostergren, Hanover registrar. “If it goes more than that, I’m going into panic mode.“

Primaries typically bring out 8 percent to 20 percent of registered voters in Hanover, Ostergren said. So far, Ashland, Montpelier and Cold Harbor are running higher than that.
