Huge blunders?
October 02, 2008 9:55 PM

It sounds like Governor Palin isn’t counting on a Christmas invitation to the Bush White House.

“There have been huge blunders in the war,“ she said. “There have been huge blunders throughout this administration, as there are with every administration.

“But for a (Democratic) ticket that wants to talk about change and looking into the future, there’s just too much finger-pointing backwards to ever make us believe that that’s where you’re going.

“Positive change is coming, though. Reform of government is coming. We’ll learn from the past mistakes in this administration and other administrations.“

Biden tries to dig out on coal
October 02, 2008 9:37 PM

Biden is trying to dig his way out of his recent quotes against coal plants that have become an issue in Southwest Virginia.

Biden said tonight that he has a 25-year record of support for clean-coal technology. “A comment in a rope line was taken out of context,“ he says.

Biden is talking about his comments last month after a campaign appearance in Ohio, that were captured in a video and aired on YouTube. In Ohio Biden told an anti-coal protester: “No coal plants here in America. We’re not supporting clean coal.”

Biden says he was making the point that America needs to export “clean-coal” technology to China so that when it burns coal the process will be cleaner.

Barack Obama has received the endorsement of the United Mine Workers of America.

Bless those oil CEOs’ hearts
October 02, 2008 9:23 PM

Say this about Gov. Sarah Palin. She’s different. When’s the last time we heard a vice presidential nominee who spoke like this:

On Alaska’s oil company CEOs:

“Tillerson at Exxon and Mulva at ConocoPhillips, bless their hearts, they’re doing what they need to do, as corporate CEOs, but they’re not my biggest fans, because what I had to do up there in Alaska was to break up a monopoly up there and say, you know, the people are going to come first and we’re going to make sure that we have value given to the people of Alaska with those resources.“

On what McCain campaign promises might give way to the economic meltdown:

“How long have I been at this, like five weeks? So there hasn’t been a whole lot that I’ve promised, except to do what is right for the American people, put government back on the side of the American people, stop the greed and corruption on Wall Street.“

On offshore drilling: “The chant is ‘Drill, baby, drill.“

Biden returns to Virginia Sunday
October 02, 2008 9:02 PM

Palin just greeted Biden by asking him, “Can I call you Joe?“ Virginians also are getting to know Biden on a first-name basis.

The Obama campaign just announced that Biden is returning to Virginia Sunday, to headline a “community gathering” in Roanoke about the economic downturn. Barack Obama will campaign in Newport News on Saturday.

Tickets for the Biden event in Roanoke will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at Obama’s Campaign for Change Office at 151 Campbell Ave SW Roanoke on Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

A personal bond for Biden and Palin
October 02, 2008 8:25 PM

Tonight’s vice presidential debate is sure to highlight the vast differences between Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin. But for all of their distinctions and disagreements, in life experience, political experience,  ideology and personal style, they share a personal bond.

Both have sons who have or will soon deploy to Iraq.

On Sept. 11 in Fairbanks, Alaska Palin spoke at a farewell ceremony as her soldier son, Track, 19, prepared to deploy with the 25th Infantry Division.

Tomorrow, Biden will be in Dover, Del. where he will take part in a farewell ceremony for a Delaware National Guard Unit. Its members include Biden’s son Beau, 39, Delaware’s attorney general and a member of the Judge Advocate General corps.
